A change of state
You can listen to the audio version of this post below.
This is a part of the October blog challenge. You can find the other posts here.
My sister and I were discussing fire and water the other day. I was telling her that I always wondered how people discovered fire and learned to use it. As much as I loved the story from Greek mythology about how Prometheus stole it from the Gods and brought it to the humans, I would love some other explanations (and please feel free to put them in the comments 🤣🤣).
She told me she was more fascinated by water, and how something that is such an essential part of life, and a part of our bodies is also used for washing, bathing, powering engines (through steam) and of course making sno cones (to name a few).
It got me thinking about steam, water and ice and the change of state that it undergoes as energy is applied, that gives it different properties. And it also got me thinking about my own state of mind, and how that changes, depending on what type of energy I apply to myself.
And as I continue this October blog challenge, I am reminded how much writing puts me in a positive, joyful state of mind. In fact, when I started paying more attention to how I felt, I realized that there are some activities which definitely make me feel great, or sometimes even changing my focus, while there are other activities that leave me feeling absolutely drained.
Sometimes these changes can be subtle and short lived, lifting my spirits for a few minutes - a phonecall from my nephew, a fun meme or video from a friend, a lovely cup of chai tea, or a song on the radio. Some have a more lasting effect, and for me - writing is one of those things. For example, in this blog challenge, I enjoy the writing, but I also enjoy recording the audio, and sharing it with friends and family. And I also get a little spark when I think of a new idea for a post, and sometimes I whip out my phone or a pen and paper to jot down notes.
Knowing how to change my state has been a game changer for me.
I find that it is so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life, and before I know it, I feel drained and tired from work, or daily chores and errands. Realizing that there are little things I can do or focus on to change my state, and make me feel a spark of joy allows me to get mini refreshers throughout the day.
I have become way more intentional about building these moments and practices into my life. It has done wonders for my mental health, and I am sure has meant I am a better friend and/or work colleague (although - you’ll have to ask those around me!)
So today’s post is short and hopefully sweet, and I would love you to reflect. What changes your state? What activities, moments and practices bring you a spark of joy? Can you build more of them into your day?
And as an extra treat - here are 5 activities/moments that have been changing my state over the past few weeks.
Idris Elba can do anything (sketch) - Famalam. I have been laughing at this for weeks. Please note, there is some strong language.
Sugar Sugar by the Archies - This video brought a smile to my face and memories of reading Archie comics as a child.
Santa’s coming for us - Sia - right now one of the radio stations here is playing Christmas in October, and this is the first time in many years that I am indulging. Here is a song that always cheers me up!
Hamilton Animatics - I became obsessed with Hamilton, so imagine my delight when a friend sent me this video where I could see it come to life in a different way.
And lastly my latchook - in the photo above!
I send you big love from a small island.
